Funky Diva is a Los Angeles based dance costume manufacturer, with both wholesale and retail sales. Their outfits are popular with gymnastic teams, dancers, drama groups and costume houses, with a primary target of girls age 7 to 21. Davis Photographic was hired to shoot their catalog this year, over a period of four Sundays.
Because of the age of the models, the studio lounge area was filled with parents, brothers and sisters, cousins and aunts, in addition to the usually collection of makeup and hair stylists, clients and assistants. It was wild! Many of the models were gymnasts, and all were trained dancers, so it was easy to poise them in urban dance, lyrical, hip hop, ballet and other dance styles. The flexibility of some models was amazing! Many could put their foot behind their head, do the splits, and one girl wrapped her leg around her neck!
The richly colored and often shiny fabrics created lighting challenges, but the client seemed to enjoy seeing lots of highlights on the reflective clothing. We photographed close to 100 outfits, and tried to keep the creative excitement as high at the end of the day as at the beginning. The catalog was printed in China, and is in distribution now.
I usually shoot 3-6 catalogs a year, and like how predictable it is – I know what I will be doing tomorrow! My first catalog photo shoot was in 1985, an 80 page, full color camping and military supply catalog. I shot it again the following year, and the project helped to finance my first professional camera and lighting kits. As the former Vice President of an advertising agency, I have been involved in every aspect of catalog production, from copy writing, graphic design to press checks. It often calls for long hours, attention to details and hard, thankless work. I am happy to be doing the photography again, as I know that it is the easy and most glamorous part!
